The Common Denominator of the Remote Hybrid Dilemma

The Common Denominator of the Remote Hybrid Dilemma

By: Ross Paterson

The second of a four-part series on the Remote/Hybrid/Return-To-Office dilemma. Here’s the first one if you missed it. XM Truth: The science and psychology of team performance are overwhelmingly in favor of humans being in close proximity to each other.

We won’t be able to settle a debate about Remote/Hybrid/RTO work through four short pieces of content. Work type, teams, leaders, strategies, business models, and personalities all come to play.

No matter your business model, the common denominator is you are working with humans. And our people need these three things to do their best work.

  1. Bond with their leader. When they have a deep, heart-to-heart connection with their leader, and know their leader cares and sacrifices for them, they do their best work. Trust is a feeling, you can’t demand it, you earn it over time.

  2. Buy-In. Our vocations give us meaning and purpose…or they don’t. SMB Owners create work worth doing by defining PURPOSE, VALUES, and VISION. With our strong bond, we work to connect what our humans’ desire to what the business inspires to be.

  3. Brotherhood. One of our deepest human needs is community. Teams that thrive have a deep affection and loyalty for each other and the cause. If you have ever experienced this level of connection at work or on any team, it did not happen by accident. The leaders and organization have intentionally built this camaraderie.

Bond, Buy-in, and Brotherhood are all amplified and accelerated when humans are in close proximity. They can absolutely be built remotely, but it requires a focused and time-intensive commitment from the leaders.
