Your Guide to Human Potential

The Art and Science of Coaching Humans

By: Ross Paterson
Have you been following our series of Hire-Coach-Keep? The battle for talent is intense in the SMB space.

Check out the video that sets up this blog on coaching humans. Here are four simple coaching practices that will multiply your teammates engagement, excitement, and effectiveness for your business.

  • Know what is important to them:  We work with whole humans, not just work humans. Know their story, family, hobbies, and what they want in their professional life. (Art)

  • Know their wiring: Study your teammates personality profiles and strengths. We love the DiSC plus Motivators from TTi. (Download Ross’ one-pager for a sample). You don’t have to wait a year to know how people communicate, want to be managed, and their ideal working environments. Use this tool to learn theirs, then teach them yours. Guaranteed multiplier if you have never tried this. (Science)

  • Ask Don’t Tell: Next time you are getting ready to direct your teammates ask this question. “What do you think we should do?”  Great coaches ask questions, guide thinking, and lead their people to discover. Teach them to problem solve, not come to you for answers. (Art and Science)

  • Coaching Takes TIME: You have to put time for coaching people on your calendar and theirs.

Usually, the lack of coaching is as much a ‘No Time’ problem as it is a ‘Know How’ problem. It will be uncomfortable when you first get started, but your work will become easier and incredibly more fulfilling when you coach the next level out of your humans.
