Here is a short list that will help you assess and improve your hiring process. How well do you and your team execute these steps when hiring for your SMB?
1. Have a purpose for existing that rises above the basics of business.
2. Build a culture that positively grows humans and multiplies engagement.
3. As you break out of start-up mode, create as much role clarity as possible. (See video on role clarity)
4. Turn your job descriptions into inspiring and compelling job postings (Sell the opportunity.)
5. Use the initial application process to intentionally and efficiently screen out the wrong candidates.
6. Develop pre-screen criteria and use a 15-20 minute zoom/phone interview to assess for culture, attitude, purpose alignment. (Sell the opportunity.)
7. Design a thorough, but not wearisome, interview and assessment process:
- Behavior-based interview questions that are job specific.
- Technical and aptitude tests for any critical skill.
- Get the team involved in the evaluation of culture fit and alignment.
- Passionately and repetitively sell the opportunity.
8. In a competitive market get ready to move quickly when you find amazing candidates. They most likely have other offers in their hands, or coming soon.
9. Make the offer verbally over the phone, sell the opportunity again. Follow up with an official offer letter in writing.
10. Create a Day-1 WOW experience. Have their workspace, technology, company swag ready. Write a 30-60-90-day plan for onboarding and Xcelerating their impact.
Human souls are being crushed in most corporate environments. In spite of that truth, people are still apprehensive about jumping into the SMB space.
