Besides steady bonuses and promotions, how does your team know that they are Appreciated and that you Recognize them?

If you have teammates you want to develop for future leadership roles, you should be giving positive feedback now to grow their confidence and acknowledge their progress. When your people feel appreciated and recognize their strengths, their engagement and trust will also multiply. *And remember: money and titles aren’t feedback. Here’s a simple outline to get started:

  1. Be specific. Explain exactly where the person delivered discretionary effort, and tie their efforts to the overall “why” of the business.

❌ Good job today. You were awesome.

✅ Not everything went as planned, but you were so adaptable and calm in front of the clients. You also helped me get prepared in less time. This all matters to give a lasting impact that the clients can remember.

  2. Identify appreciation styles. Don’t call the shyest person out in front of the group, even for a job well done. Consider other options, like private recognition or custom trophies to put on their desk.
  3. Foster the culture. Top-down feedback from leaders is crucial, but it’s not the only type of recognition that matters. Build an environment where the team recognizes each other’s strengths. When appreciation comes from all directions, it fortifies bonds and creates a powerful positive feedback loop.

Positive feedback isn’t complicated, but it takes intention. It’s about being specific, knowing your team, and building a culture where everyone feels seen. To start, here’s a non-affiliated link for MBA Inventory’s appreciation style assessment.
