It’s not hard to find SMB teams with detailed strategies, plans, and budgets for business development (Marketing, Prospecting, Selling).
 
A little less frequently, we find teams with similar clarity around system and process improvements. New equipment, software upgrades, and other capital improvements get all of the attention, analysis, and a budget for ROI.
 
 

Rarely do we find SMB owners and teams who spend their time and attention on HUMAN CAPITAL. They are unintentionally following the ‘Field of Dreams’ model of: “If you build it…they will come.”

We’re challenging business owners to consider these three lessons in planning for HUMAN CAPITAL in 2025:
 
 
1. Unleash your Current Talent.
  • Most humans are sitting on untapped potential. I am not sure why this is true. Use a simple relational engagement of spending time with them and repetitively ask, “what excites you most about our work?” Give them more of that.
 
2. Identify Gaps.
  • Make a projection for growth. What would the team need to look like if your business doubled? Who do you need to hire first? (Tune in next week for ‘How not to suck at hiring.’)
 
3. Coach Underperformers Up or Out. 
  • “I wish I had done it sooner…” -our clients says this after two XM Performance engagements. This happens after they hire an SBX/EA, AND after the ‘problem child’ on the team has been turned around…or turned loose.
