Four Steps to a Turnaround or Turn Loose

Don't Let One Bad Apple Spoil Your SMB

Four Steps to a Turnaround or Turn Loose

By: Ross Paterson

Click here to check out our video this week – describing two types of Bad Apples that bring sour dysfunction to our SMBs.

Our full prescription if you’re considering letting an employee go is outlined below in four steps:

Step #1: Love Them. Care about the humans in your business enough to be present and make sure they are okay. Many times, underperformance is an indicator of a major family crisis.

Step #2: Crack Open the Door. Start by sharing vision and values of the company. Then be clear and specific about their performance/behavior problems. Comfort them in knowing that if they are not happy here, it is okay with you if they want to leave and work somewhere else.

Step #3: Coach Them Up. Collaboratively create a clear 90-day turnaround plan. Put it in writing and sign it together as a mutual commitment to the process. Schedule time for weekly coaching and accountability.

Step #4: Coach Them Out. If the agreed progress is not being made, you will have to make a tough decision. The rest of your team is counting on you. Take courage and administer tough love before you lose the best players.

Our experience has been that handling these conversations is one of the most heart-wrenching responsibilities of being a business owner.  You are not alone. Schedule a free call with one of our consultants if you need outside perspectives for handling your bad apples.
