In a scene from Bill Watterson’s classic comic Calvin & Hobbes, the anti-hero, Calvin, decides to build a duplicator. His theory: if he can create another Calvin, the duplicate can be responsible for the chores, homework and other things the original Calvin doesn’t want to do. Predictably, the duplicate Calvin won’t do the homework or chores either.
SMB Owners and entrepreneurs often think like Calvin.
SMB Owner: “If we could just clone me, then we could grow faster.”
XM Performance: “Don’t do it!”
I will break this to you as gently as possible: Even with all your entrepreneurial genius, grit, and drive, you are not that good at everything. And the last thing your business needs to grow and break through to the next level is another you.
Step #1: Know Thyself. What are your real strengths? How can you build a team around you that keeps you operating in those strengths 80%+ of your time?
Step #2: Find a wingman, EA, SBX (Small Business Xcelerator) who has strengths, skills, and abilities that naturally cover your blind spots. Give them permission and authority to make ‘stuff’ happen without you.
Step #3: Make a Future Human Capital Plan. Project for the future growth of your organization. Anticipate the roles and abilities your next teammates will need.
Step #4: Build the Team. Learn how to recruit, assess, and onboard new talent for high-impact Xceleration.
You are probably closer to your next revenue breakthrough than you imagine. We will look forward to seeing you on the Xtra Mile. |
